HUMANITARIAN PROJECT

We are making toys to send to Zambia, to the children of this orpahnage. We are making crocheted balls and frisbees and Black Apple dolls. If you would like to participate by crocheting or sewing an article or two to send, the patterns for crochet are below and there is a link to a pattern for the doll also. You can contact me at newlewis2@yahoo.com , to make arrangements to get the finished projects to me or ask questions about the patterns below. We would like to have the finished items by the 1st of June 2012.

Black Apple Doll

HUMANITARIAN BALL

ch=chain
slst=slipstitch
sc=single crochet
Use an F or G crochet hook

  1. Ch 2 or make Magic Circle Magic Circle
  2. 6 sc in 1st chain or magic loop (6 st)
  3. 2 sc in each sc. Repeat to the end of round (12 st)
  4. 1 sc in the next sc then 2 sc in following sc. Repeat until end of round (18 st)
  5. 1 sc in following 2 sc then 2 sc in next sc. Repeat until end of round (24 st)
  6. – 10. Sc into each sc until 5 rounds have been completed.

  1. sc into each of the next 3 sc then skip the 4th sc. Repeat until end.
  2. Sc into each of the next 2 sc then skip the third sc. Repeat until end.
  3. Sc into every second sc. Repeat until end.
  4. Continue to follow the instructions from round 13 until hole is about the size of a nikel.
  5. Turn ball inside out.’
  6. Stuff ball with fiberfill and close opening by sc into every other stitch until you can’t go any farther
  7. Cut yarn about 6 inches long and using a yarn needle, weave the yarn back and forth, closing the end hole completely.

To make a bigger ball – In the 6th round, instead of just doing a sc in every sc, sc into each of the following 3 sc then 2 sc into the 4th sc. This means that for round 11, you would sc into each of the next 4 sc and skip the 5th sc, repeating until the end of the round.

CROCHETED FRISBEE
Crochet hook size F or G
Scrap yarn, 4 ply, not soft
Abbreviations
sc – single crochet
sl – slip stitch
Chain 4, join with a sl to form a ring. (Or make magic circle)Magic Circle
  1. Chain 1 (counts as sc throughout) work 9 sc into ring, sl into first sc (10 sc)
  2. Chain 1, sc in same stitch, 2 sc in each stitch around, sl to first sc to join (20 sc)
  3. Chain 1, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next stitch, repeat around and sl to join (24 sc)
  4. Chain 1 sc in same stitch (making 2 sc), 1 sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat around.

  5. (TIP 1 - From here on, just single crochet around and around without joining rounds, it’s faster. If your work starts to cup, take out a couple of stitches and add more as you go. If your work starts to ruffle, take out a couple of stitches and work into each stitch with one sc. That should flatten the work out.)

    (TIP 2 - To add a different color, wait until you have 2 loops on the hook, ready to make your single crochet, and simply pull another color through the two loops, keeping your yarn snug as you go. Then cut the original color yarn, leaving enough to weave in later. Proceed with pattern as before.)

  6. Do 1 sc into 4 stitches then do 2 sc into the 5th stitch, remembering the TIP above. Repeat around until you are at the 15th row or the size you want the frisbee to be.
  7. When frisbee is size you want, sc into the back of the stitch all the way around with no increases of decreases.
  8. Last 2 rows sc into back of stitch, decreasing every 5 stitches. (sc into 4 stitches and skip the 5th stitch)
  9. Cut yarn and weave ends into pattern.
REMEMBER, keep your work as flat as possible by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches you use as you go. Everyone crochets with a different tension. Don’t get frustrated if it does not look right. Just take out a couple of stitches or add a couple as needed. You can dampen the frisbee and lay it out flat to block it or use a light touch with a steam iron and a cloth to flatten it out being careful not to press down into the yarn too much.
