When I was a kid, we lived next door to Grandma and Grandpa Corbridge. Grandma and Grandpa had appartments and houses for rent and we rented a house from them. We lived at 1959 Chestnut Ave. There was a lawn in back of our house and in front of the house behind us. The lawn was just outside of Grandma and Grandpa's back door too. We had a lot of fun times in that spot but I remember particularly, how Grandpa would go and get a bunch of watermelons and bring them home for a watermelon bust! Meaning: You get a watermelon and cut it and eat it...watermelon bust.
He would get on the phone and call all of the cousins and whoever showed up had watermelon and the pleasure of each other's company. We had watermelon seed spitting contests to see who could spit a seed the farthest. Now it's hard to find a watermelon with seeds, they are mostly the seedless variety.
So last week I decided to have a watermelon bust of my own. I invited all the grandkids that we have here and bought some watermelons. We got together in our backyard and cut open the melons and ate until we were full. In her family, they call Mackenzie the watermelon whisperer. She is REALLY good at picking watermelons. She brought one, that she had chosen, with her and it was delicious.
After we had eaten our fill of watermelon, we got out the buckets and sponges, that Grandpa Lewis uses for the "Sponge Game", filled them with water and had a wet sponge fight. It was pretty fun! Wyatt, Ali and Morgie were really trying to get me wet and they succeeded! I have to say that I gave as good as I got though. They were soaked when the game was over!
We needed a popcicle break after all the waterfun and everyone slurped a popcicle or two, including me...sugar free!
I also had a basket of school supplies and everyone who came got to pick two things, from the basket, to take home with them.
It was a lot of fun and should be repeated often! Love you guys! Thanks for the great example you set for me Grandpa Corbridge!
PS - I forgot to say that Lexie's friend came too and got all wet!
